Les Mousquetaires, the operator of French supermarkets including Intermarché, has disclosed that a cyberattack on its refrigeration systems impacted approximately 150 stores. Reuters reported the incident on October 12.
According to Reuters, temperatures in the refrigeration equipment at the affected stores rose to a maximum of 50 degrees Celsius and remained elevated for about 6 hours. For food safety reasons, the impacted products were discarded. The operating company stated that the attackers remotely controlled the cooling equipment.
France's national cybersecurity agency ANSSI also issued a warning on October 12, confirming numerous compromises in Danfoss-made controllers, specifically the "AK-SM" and "AK-SC" series, which manage freezing and refrigeration equipment. ANSSI recommended not directly exposing management interfaces to the internet and implementing access restrictions.
The identity of the attackers, the intrusion method, and the full extent of the damage, including any impact beyond Intermarché, have not yet been revealed.
