Ebi Chili-style at a gyumeshi restaurant! This generous chunkiness is a winner.
Do you like Ebi Chili? Then, how about Matsuya's "Goro Chiki Chili"?
Greetings, I'm Nabeko, your resident food reporter. Today, I tried Matsuya's "Goro Chiki Chili Sauce Teishoku," released on October 20th.
When you think of Matsuya, known for its gyumeshi, you often hear the name "Goro Goro Chicken," or "Goro Chiki" for short. This time, they've apparently given "Goro Chiki" a Chinese-style twist.

Released on October 20th.
"Goro Chiki Chili Sauce" made with a special chili sauce. In other words, it's like a chicken version of Ebi Chili. The price for the set meal is 990 yen.
While it's a bit luxurious for a Matsuya set meal, there are also set meals exceeding 1000 yen recently, so it's still an accessible price range.
"Goro Chiki" Goes Chinese!? Tasting the "Goro Chiki Chili Sauce Teishoku"
Here is the "Goro Chiki Chili Sauce Teishoku." If you choose without fresh vegetables, you get a 100 yen discount.

"Goro Chiki Chili Sauce Teishoku" (990 yen)
If my memory serves me correctly (like a certain nostalgic TV show), this "Goro Chiki" first appeared as the "Goro Goro Nikomi Chicken Curry." It used large pieces of chicken grilled on a hot plate, and its generous chicken and well-balanced curry made it an instant hit.

Large pieces of chicken are abundant. A fitting appearance for the "Goro Chiki" series.
The "Goro Goro Nikomi Chicken Curry" (originally named "Goro Goro Chicken Curry") debuted in 2016, and for a while, "Goro Chiki" brought that curry to mind. However, it has now expanded beyond curry and is used in various dishes.
For example, this "Goro Chiki" is also used in "Shukumeruli," a Georgian dish adapted Matsuya-style.
This time, it's said to use spicy doubanjiang and a sweet-and-sour chili sauce. Eggs are laid beneath the ingredients, making it surprisingly substantial. The red, yellow, and green of the scallions also create a beautiful color palette.

True to "Goro Chiki" style, the chicken pieces are large. Counting them, there were 7 large pieces and 1 small piece, totaling about 7.5 pieces.

Miso soup is also included.
Sweet and Spicy, But "Spicy > Sweet" – Garlic Kicks In, Making You Crave More Rice
Ebi Chili comes in both sweeter and spicier varieties, doesn't it?
Before trying Matsuya's "Goro Chiki Chili Sauce," I had somewhat imagined a sweeter Ebi Chili flavor.

Surprisingly spicy! The garlic is prominent.
However, upon tasting it, the doubanjiang was prominent, delivering a strong, piquant spiciness. Moreover, it wasn't just spicy; the sweetness and sourness intertwined, creating a surprisingly robust Chinese flavor.
And the addictive aftertaste? It seems to be garlic. Yes, this chili sauce has a strong garlic presence. The umami of garlic and aromatic vegetables, combined with the sweet and spicy notes, creates a flavor that makes you want more and more rice.
In any case, this sauce is delicious!
When the plump, juicy chicken is generously coated in the sweet and spicy sauce, it's pure bliss. And the eggs laid underneath play a great role, mellowing out the piquant sauce. Indeed, the addition of eggs elevates the deliciousness to another level.

The eggs are a nice touch.
I was a bit surprised, thinking, "Wait, Matsuya can do this kind of Chinese-style flavor too?"
This reminds me of Matsuya's Chinese restaurant business. Matsuya Foods also operates "Shoken Chuka Shokudo," a local Chinese diner. Perhaps their chili sauce expertise comes from that venture.

Piled on rice.
This is great! Chicken Chili Don!
You can fully enjoy the piquant, garlic-infused chili sauce. It feels like I'll run out of rice. The volume as a donburi is also satisfying.

The rice soaks up every last drop of the delicious sauce.
As I ate, I wanted a slight change in flavor, so I tried adding the French dressing from the table. The acidity added a refreshing touch to the aftertaste. Chili sauce and French dressing, they're a good match!

Flavor change with French dressing is also delicious.
Not a Miss! Matsuya's Ventures Like This Make Me Happy
Matsuya continuously releases limited-time menus, and sometimes I think, "Isn't the flavor a bit too much?" However, this time, it was personally a hit.
The "Goro Chiki Chili Sauce," a surprising Chinese-style menu item, seemed like it might prioritize impact, but it was surprisingly well-executed. Even the shrimp in Ebi Chili can't afford to be complacent.
These unexpected discoveries in Matsuya's limited-time menus are what make me happy.

Making it a donburi is recommended. However, be careful not to burn yourself as the dish is hot.
I highly recommend boldly piling all the "Goro Chiki Chili Sauce" onto your rice.
