U.S. Waymo announced on September 14th its plan to commercialize an unmanned autonomous ride-hailing service in Tokyo in 2027, in collaboration with Nihon Kotsu and GO. The service aims for fully autonomous operation carrying general users, with ride-hailing available through both the GO and Waymo apps.
The service will commence with a small fleet, with plans to gradually expand to approximately 100 vehicles in key areas of Tokyo. Envisioned as a 24-hour on-demand service, it is designed to coexist with conventional taxis.
Waymo began operations in Tokyo in 2025. Currently, trained Nihon Kotsu drivers are accompanying the vehicles in the driver's seat, continuing verification to adapt the autonomous driving system "Waymo Driver" to Tokyo's unique narrow roads and traffic environment.
For the commercial service, vehicles will operate fully autonomously without human drivers. The GO app will allow users to hail Waymo's autonomous vehicles in addition to conventional human-driven taxis.
However, the 2027 launch is not yet finalized. Waymo states that it is conditional on obtaining necessary permits and approvals from national and local governments, and completing verification of its autonomous driving technology and operational system.
