Digital Hollywood University announced on October 14th that it will implement Anthropic's generative AI "Claude" campus-wide, providing an environment where all students and faculty can use it starting in November. This marks the first campus-wide implementation at a university in Japan. Students will be able to use it for free via their university accounts, and sufficient usage limits will be provided for creative work and research.

This is part of the "Campus-Wide AI Platform" that the university has been operating since September. In addition to allowing the use of multiple generative AIs, it will integrate with the educational platform "Campus Portal" to facilitate interactions with AI teaching assistants for each class, review learning, and more.

President Naotaka Fujii himself has been developing the university's educational platform, "Campus Portal," using Claude Code. According to Fujii, he is the sole developer and continues to fix bugs even after its launch (from President Fujii's Note). Fujii explained on X that the fact he, as president, developed the system himself seems to have piqued Anthropic's interest, posting, "Lucky they noticed me lol."

Today's President: While Claude's campus-wide implementation is a first for a Japanese university, the trigger seems to have been that the president himself was coding the university's core system with Claude. It's said that Anthropic usually doesn't reply, but I'm lucky they noticed me lol.

Claude will be widely utilized for creative activities such as game development, video production, web design, and programming, as well as for research, thesis writing, and university administrative tasks. Classes will also be revised to incorporate assignment design and evaluation that assume AI usage, and rules regarding copyright and personal information handling will be established.
