The limited-time event 'UCC Capsule Coffee Shop' held in the 1st-floor atrium of Tokyo Midtown Hibiya

The limited-time event 'UCC Capsule Coffee Shop' is currently being held in Hibiya, Tokyo, for four days from October 9th to October 12th. Timed with 'UCC Capsule Coffee Day' on October 10th, this free event allows visitors to experience the appeal of the DRIP POD capsule drip coffee system, marking its third year.

This Year Features a Giant 5-Meter Gacha Machine!

This year, a special booth has been set up in the 1st-floor atrium of Tokyo Midtown Hibiya, leveraging the open, airy space to serve free coffee brewed with DRIP POD. Many visitors flocked to the event from the first day, creating a lively atmosphere.

The UCC Capsule Coffee Shop is an event where visitors can enjoy 'coffee capsule and snack pairings (mariages)' obtained by spinning a gacha machine. Inside the venue, a specially produced, approximately 5-meter-tall 'Coffee Gacha' – the largest ever – has been installed under the supervision of Takara Tomy Arts.

Approaching the 5-meter giant gacha

Visitors show their smartphone screen to receive a coin at the reception, then turn a giant handle, seven times the size of a regular gacha machine, to receive a capsule containing a DRIP POD exclusive capsule, a snack, and a card explaining their pairing. The handle provides the distinctive clicking sensation of a gacha, making the realistic gacha experience a key feature.

The dial is also a giant size, seven times larger than usual.

The 14 varieties of DRIP POD exclusive capsules offered (12 standard types and 2 specialty capsules) are carefully selected by UCC, and the accompanying snacks (such as fruit tarts, apple yokan, and florentines) are also said to be professionally curated to enhance the coffee's flavor.

Offering New Encounters Through Capsule x Capsule

The UCC Capsule Coffee Shop is an event that combines 'coffee capsules' and 'capsule toys.' The focus is on new encounters with coffee. Instead of visitors choosing the coffee they want to drink, the event introduces an element of chance (randomness), offering an opportunity to discover coffee flavors they might not typically pick up.

At the same time, it aims to convey the deliciousness and convenience of capsule drip coffee machines. UCC's flagship model, 'DRIP POD YOUBI,' is characterized by its ability to precisely replicate professional hand-drip techniques. The event also emphasizes providing an experience where visitors can operate the machine themselves and taste a delicious freshly brewed cup.

Inside the venue, five spaces (living room, workspace, Japanese-style room, dining room, and bedroom area) are arranged to match the body colors of DRIP POD YOUBI, allowing visitors to enjoy coffee in a relaxed atmosphere. It can be said to be an ideal space for those visiting Hibiya for work or leisure to take a relaxing break.

Embracing Randomness to Discover New Coffee Charms

Last year's UCC Capsule Coffee Shop, held in Roppongi, saw approximately 4,000 participants over four days, with 97 percent responding 'delicious' in a post-experience survey, confirming high satisfaction with capsule drip coffee.

However, a separate awareness survey conducted by UCC revealed that frequent coffee drinkers tend to feel 'flavor monotony,' while those who drink less often 'haven't found their preferred coffee.'

For instance, one in two heavy users who drink 6-7 or more cups a week reported 'feeling bored with their usual taste.' Conversely, one in three light to medium users who drink 1-5 cups a week reported experiences like 'leaving coffee unfinished because the taste didn't suit them' or 'failing when trying new beans.'

UCC interprets this as a psychological hurdle: a desire to try new flavors coupled with an aversion to making a 'bad' choice.

The key point of this initiative is to address these dual challenges of 'monotony' and 'fear of failure' through randomness. Even unfamiliar flavors that visitors wouldn't normally choose for themselves can be positively embraced through the entertaining gacha experience. The UCC Capsule Coffee Shop is a marketing initiative designed to introduce new elements into often-fixed daily drinking habits and convey the rich lineup and authentic deliciousness of capsule drip coffee.

Branding in Collaboration with Takara Tomy Arts

Takara Tomy Arts is a strong supporter of this event. This year marks their second collaboration, featuring even deeper content, such as the creation of a giant gacha machine unprecedented in their history and the pre-sale of the 'UCC Ueshima Coffee Mark Gacha Mascot' at the venue, ahead of its nationwide release in November.

The UCC Ueshima Coffee Mark Gacha Mascot is a miniature version of iconic UCC products like 'DRIP POD YOUBI' and 'UCC Milk Coffee,' featuring an elaborate finish that faithfully reproduces even the tiny text on the back of the packaging.

Through this cross-industry collaboration, UCC expects to reach women in their 20s and 30s and younger demographics interested in entertainment, who were previously difficult to approach with traditional coffee marketing. By transforming the 'experience' (koto) at the event venue into a 'product' (mono) in the form of a capsule toy that consumers can take home, this also serves as a long-term, multi-layered branding strategy to create continuous touchpoints with the UCC brand in consumers' daily lives.

Expanding to Venues Outside Tokyo in 2026

For 2026, the UCC Capsule Coffee Shop initiative has expanded beyond Tokyo.

The flagship venue at Tokyo Midtown Hibiya will be open for four days from Friday, October 9th to Monday (holiday), October 12th, 2026, from 10:00 to 19:00 (only 12:30 to 19:30 on the first day). Anyone can spin the giant Coffee Gacha for free by following UCC's official social media (Instagram or X), and enjoy the brewing experience and eat-in pairings.

Additionally, events will be held over two days, Saturday, October 10th, and Sunday, October 11th, at commercial facilities in three cities: AEON Mall Atsuta in Aichi Prefecture, AEON Mall Dainichi in Osaka Prefecture, and AEON Mall Hiroshima Gion in Hiroshima Prefecture.

At venues outside Tokyo, a free gacha experience is available by answering a simple questionnaire, with a target of 11,000 total participants: 5,000 at the Tokyo venue and 6,000 across the three AEON Mall venues.

This nationwide expansion aims to broadly deliver the appeal of capsule coffee, which has previously focused on urban areas, to families and a wider range of consumers in regional cities.

The encounter with 'the joy of coffee you haven't yet discovered,' proposed by UCC – a company that has long led Japan's coffee culture by blending technology and entertainment – is sure to transform people's daily coffee time into something richer and more expansive, going beyond a mere event experience.
