On October 18, Business Tech announced that unauthorized access had occurred to the crematorium reservation system it provides to Ashikaga City, Tochigi Prefecture, potentially leading to a leak of personal information. Ashikaga City also announced on the same day that approximately 8,800 user records and information from 56 registered funeral service providers might have been affected.

According to the city, the affected user information includes records registered on or after December 1, 2022, comprising the names, dates of birth, addresses, and genders of the deceased, as well as the names, addresses, and phone numbers of the applicants. For funeral service providers, the compromised data includes company names, addresses, phone numbers, and email addresses.

Ashikaga City has switched to an alternative reservation system via telephone and continues to accept crematorium bookings this way. Individuals and businesses potentially affected by the leak will be notified individually and sequentially by the outsourced vendor. The system's resumption will be announced once its security has been confirmed.
