On September 29, OpenAI held its developer event "OpenAI DevDay 2026" in San Francisco, where it announced a new AI agent called "dots." This "always-on" agent is designed to continuously carry out tasks on behalf of users and is powered by GPT-6 Astra.
dots comes with its own dedicated cloud computer and browser, capable of tasks like code creation and testing. For instance, if tasked with migrating from an old API, it can investigate code dependencies, make corrections, test, and even create pull requests. It integrates with over 4,000 applications and can utilize plugins that users have already connected to ChatGPT.
dots doesn't require detailed instructions every time. It learns user workflows and preferences, can review information received overnight to highlight important matters the next morning, or take on tasks requested via Slack. In the future, features for interacting with dots via text messages and phone calls will also be provided.
For teams, "ChatGPT Space" was also announced. This allows humans and dots to collaboratively edit documents, data, graphs, and more on the same page, and manage files collectively. Future plans include adding presentation features that are easy for AI to directly edit.
Meanwhile, the main ChatGPT features announced this time were strongly geared towards higher-tier plans rather than general users. dots will initially be available for Pro, Business Premium, and Enterprise users, with the free and Plus versions not included in the initial rollout. OpenAI is also introducing a new $500/month plan, "Pro 500," for high-usage users.
Additionally, other announcements included "GPT-6.1 Sol," offering performance close to Astra at a lower cost; "Ultrafast," for high-speed model operation; and "Agent API," for developing agents. Plugin extension features were announced as available for all plans.
Overall, the DevDay announcements emphasized "AI that can be entrusted with work" and environments tailored for professional users and businesses utilizing it. Notably, there was no announcement regarding the proprietary hardware reportedly under development. The unveiling of the anticipated new device seems to be a bit further off.
