The "Beef Plate Set Meal" (Gyusara Teishoku) is now a regular menu item at Matsuya, known for its Gyumeshi (beef bowls)! Matsuya has been selling the "Plenty of Beef Plate Set Meal" (790 yen) since October 13.
But wait a minute. When you think of Matsuya, you think of "Gyumeshi," right? Is there any point in deliberately having the beef served on a separate plate?

The "Plenty of Beef Plate Set Meal" has been a regular menu item since October 13.
With Gyumeshi Available, What's the Point of Deliberately Choosing the "Beef Plate Set Meal"?
The Beef Plate Set Meal allows you to enjoy the beef and rice from the Gyumeshi separately.
Incidentally, Matsuya has long offered "Gyusara" (beef plate) as a standalone item. There's also the "Toku-Asa Gyusara Teishoku" (Special Morning Beef Plate Set Meal) on the breakfast menu, and beef plate set meals have appeared as limited-time offers during regular hours. However, a Beef Plate Set Meal that could be ordered day or night was not part of the recent regular menu.
By the way, rival gyudon chains Yoshinoya and Sukiya have long offered "Gyusara Teishoku" as a regular menu item. So, the style of enjoying a beef plate as a set meal is by no means unusual.

"Plenty of Beef Plate Set Meal" 790 yen
Now, Matsuya's "Plenty of Beef Plate Set Meal" comes with a generous amount of beef, equivalent to a large Gyumeshi portion. In addition to rice, it includes a fresh salad, pickles, and miso soup, all for 790 yen.

The beef portion is equivalent to a large Gyumeshi. You can also choose options like extra sauce (tsuyudaku) or no sauce (tsuyunuki).
Adding Roasted Seaweed and More: The Joy Unique to White Rice
After actually trying it, I found it surprisingly good.
First, since the beef and rice are separate, you can savor the beef on its own. You also have the freedom to enjoy the rice plain or add beef little by little.

The beef can be eaten with rice or on its own.
With Gyumeshi, you tend to gobble it down quickly, but with the separate plates, you can enjoy it slowly as a proper set meal. It creates a little "mental space," so to speak.
Since there's a generous amount of beef, equivalent to a large Gyumeshi, you don't have to worry about running out of topping for your rice even if you pick at the beef on its own.

Roasted Seaweed (90 yen)
And there are pleasures unique to the separate serving style. For example, adding "Roasted Seaweed" (90 yen) and wrapping the rice and beef together sounds delicious. It offers a different way to enjoy your meal compared to Gyumeshi.

The joy of wrapping rice in seaweed.
Furthermore, the inclusion of fresh salad and pickles is a key point. Compared to the Beef Plate Set Meal at Yoshinoya and Sukiya, Matsuya's offering stands out for its more generous portion of vegetables.

Matsuya's Beef Plate Set Meal has more vegetables compared to other chains.
The price is 790 yen. Many of Matsuya's set meals are around 900 yen, so considering it as a set meal, it's relatively affordable.
