What kind of life would you have lived if you were born in a completely different country or family? This free browser game, "1 in 8 Billion," which allows players to experience such an "alternative life," is currently trending on social media. Developed by independent creator Jin Hwi-eus, the game was released on October 5th and reportedly completed in just about four hours using generative AI.
When the game begins, players are born as an individual somewhere in the world. Players cannot choose their country of birth, parents, or family's economic situation. Based on statistical data from organizations like the UN, WHO, and the World Bank, factors such as education, income, and the risk of illness or accidents are determined.
Life starts at age zero, and players age while experiencing things like school advancement, employment, romance, and marriage. While there are moments where players are forced to make choices, they may not always be able to live as they wish due to their birth environment or unexpected events. The lives of four other individuals born at the same moment as the player also progress in parallel, allowing players to witness the differences in their respective destinies.
According to a report by South Korea's Kookmin Ilbo dated October 10th, Jin instructed a generative AI on October 5th to create a life simulation based on statistical data. After sharing the development process on Threads, a social media platform, it garnered significant attention, and the website was launched on the same day. It reportedly took approximately four hours from conception to public release.
In Japan, the topic began to spread on X (formerly Twitter) around October 13th, with comments such as "I cried when I died" and "It made me think about what happiness truly is" being posted. Jin expressed his hope that players would realize the differences in life paths based on their birthplace and that this understanding would foster greater respect for others.
