On September 17, MMD Labo announced the results of its "August 2026 Smartphone OS Share Survey." For main devices, Android accounted for 54.1%, iPhone for 45.6%, and other OSes for 0.4%. The survey was conducted from August 1 to 6, targeting 40,000 men and women aged 18 to 79.
Among iPhone users, the most popular series was the "iPhone 16" at 21.8%, followed by the "iPhone 17" at 17.3% and the "iPhone 15" at 12.4%. For Android, "AQUOS" took the top spot with 25.9%, followed by "Google Pixel" at 17.6% and "Galaxy" at 14.1%.
Differences by generation were also significant. While the "iPhone 17" was most popular among those in their teens and twenties, and the "iPhone 16" for those in their thirties, "AQUOS" was the top choice for all age groups from their forties to their seventies.
Regarding devices users want to purchase next, 66.5% of iPhone users chose the "iPhone 17." Among Android users, AQUOS was chosen by 26.3%, Google Pixel by 21.4%, and Xperia by 17.5%.
While iPhone has a strong presence in Japan, Android holds the majority when all age groups are considered. Furthermore, beyond the "iPhone vs. Android" rivalry, it's striking how significantly the specific smartphone models chosen differ across generations.
