オンライン旅行会社・Expediaの子会社である Hotels.com （ホテルズドットコム）が今年10月、旅行関連のブロガーにメールを送信し、便宜を図る見返りにリンクを獲得しようとしていたことが発覚した。
米国部門のSEOマネージャーを名乗る同社スタッフが、旅行関連の話題を扱うインフルエンサー（ブロガー）を対象に電子メールを送信し、Hotels.com に関するコンテンツの執筆の相談と共に、同サイトへ向けたリンクを獲得した場合の報酬について言及していた。Google はリンクとの交換で金銭などの報酬を支払うことはガイドライン違反に当たると明記している。
この問題を受けて Hotels.com の広報は『我々は検索エンジンが公開しているガイドラインに遵守するよう努めているが、今回の（電子メールによる依頼）は社内スタッフの理解不足が招いたもので、既に問題に対処しました』と述べている。
親会社のExpedia はGoogle 検索順位が大幅に下落したことで今年1月に話題になっている。
